K-Beauty × Pharmacy: Why Musinsa Is Betting on a New Beauty Trend

K-Beauty pharmacy concept at Musinsa Beauty Hongdae

What happens when a K-Beauty store puts an actual pharmacy inside it?

That is one of the most interesting ideas inside Musinsa Beauty Hongdae, the fashion platform’s first standalone beauty store in Seoul.

Instead of focusing only on makeup displays and trending skincare, Musinsa has created a space where beauty, derma care, supplements and professional pharmacy advice sit much closer together.

It may look like an unusual retail experiment, but it also reflects a bigger change in Korean beauty: shoppers are becoming increasingly interested in ingredients, skin concerns and more targeted solutions.

What Is Musinsa Beauty Hongdae?

Musinsa Beauty Hongdae opened in September 2026 as Musinsa Beauty’s first standalone offline store.

The four-level space runs from B1 to the third floor and covers around 382 pyeong, or roughly 1,260 square metres. According to Musinsa, more than 600 beauty brands are represented across the store.

Different floors focus on different parts of the beauty experience, from makeup and fragrance to skincare, hair and body care. But the basement is the part that makes this store especially unusual.

Why Is There a Pharmacy Inside?

The B1 level includes Beauty Onnuri Pharmacy, where licensed pharmacists can provide consultations related to skin and scalp concerns as well as supplements and medicines.

This is more than simply putting a few “pharmacy-style” skincare products on a shelf. It is an actual pharmacy operating within the building.

There is an important distinction, however: Musinsa does not directly operate the pharmacy or sell the medicines itself. The pharmacy is run separately by an independent pharmacist affiliated with Onnuri Pharmacy.

Why Pharmacy Beauty Is Getting Attention

K-Beauty shopping has traditionally been driven by trends, viral products and new launches. But another type of consumer is becoming increasingly visible: the shopper who starts with a specific concern.

Instead of asking, “What is trending?”, they may ask which ingredients suit sensitive skin, which products focus on the skin barrier, or what might work for a particular scalp or skincare concern.

That creates an opportunity for retailers to organise beauty around problems, ingredients and expertise, rather than brands alone.

Musinsa’s pharmacy concept is an interesting physical expression of that shift.

What Makes Musinsa’s Approach Different?

Musinsa entered beauty from fashion, so its position is quite different from a traditional health or beauty retailer.

It already has a large audience interested in fashion, identity and new trends. Now it can introduce those shoppers to skincare, makeup, wellness and emerging beauty brands within the same lifestyle ecosystem.

The Hongdae store also places strong emphasis on newer and independent labels. According to reporting around the opening, around 70% of the beauty brands selected for the store are indie brands.

That makes the store interesting not only as a place to buy familiar K-Beauty products, but also as a possible discovery channel for the next generation of Korean beauty brands.

Why Australian K-Beauty Shoppers Should Watch

Australia already has far more access to Korean skincare than it did only a few years ago. K-Beauty is appearing across specialist retailers, beauty chains and larger pharmacy-style stores.

The next change may be less about whether Korean products are available and more about how they are curated.

If ingredient-focused and concern-based shopping continues to grow in Korea, similar ideas could eventually influence the way K-Beauty is presented overseas too.

For Australian consumers, that could mean moving beyond shelves organised mainly by brand and toward more guided shopping around skin concerns, ingredients and expert advice.

What I’m Watching Next

For me, the pharmacy inside Musinsa Beauty Hongdae is interesting because it shows how quickly the definition of a “beauty store” is changing.

Fashion, skincare, wellness, professional advice and new-brand discovery are beginning to overlap in the same retail space.

Whether pharmacy beauty becomes a major K-Beauty trend is still too early to say. But Musinsa is clearly testing a different way to help people discover beauty — and that makes this experiment worth watching.
