Musinsa vs Olive Young: The New Battle for K-Beauty — And Why Australia Should Watch

Musinsa vs Olive Young K-Beauty retail competition and Australia

For years, Olive Young has been one of the names most closely associated with discovering K-Beauty in Korea. But another major Korean retailer is moving deeper into beauty — and it comes from a very different world.

Musinsa, best known for fashion, is investing heavily in beauty, offline retail and global expansion. That creates an interesting contrast: one platform grew from beauty and wellness, while the other is bringing its fashion audience into beauty.

For shoppers in Australia, this matters because the next stage of K-Beauty may not simply be about which Korean products become popular. It may also be about who curates them, where we discover them and how they reach us.

Why Musinsa Is Moving Into Beauty

Musinsa did not begin as a beauty retailer. Its strength was fashion, particularly among younger, trend-conscious shoppers. That makes its beauty strategy interesting.

According to Musinsa, Musinsa Beauty grew by more than 50% year-on-year in 2025. The company said it would increase investment in 2026, expand offline touchpoints and accelerate its global beauty business.

Musinsa is also leaning into something it already understands well: the connection between fashion, identity and beauty. Rather than treating skincare and makeup as completely separate categories, it can place them inside the same lifestyle ecosystem as clothing and trends.

Olive Young Already Has a Different Advantage

Olive Young comes from the opposite direction. Beauty and wellness are already at the centre of its business.

Its strength is not simply having a large product selection. Olive Young has become an important discovery channel for Korean beauty trends, emerging brands and products that gain momentum with Korean consumers.

That curation model is now travelling overseas. In August 2026, the Olive Young K-Beauty Edit launched through Sephora in the United States with 19 Korean beauty brands and around 150 products across approximately 580 Sephora stores and online.

Comparison of Musinsa and Olive Young K-Beauty retail strategies

Musinsa vs Olive Young: The Real Difference

This is what makes the comparison more interesting than a simple retailer-versus-retailer story.

Olive Young is beauty-first. Its advantage is established beauty curation, product discovery and a strong offline retail network in Korea.

Musinsa is fashion-first. Its opportunity is to introduce beauty to an audience already using the platform to discover fashion, culture and personal style.

Musinsa has also been building its own beauty portfolio and experimenting internationally. Its beauty strategy therefore looks less like copying Olive Young and more like creating another route into the K-Beauty market.

K-Beauty Retail Is Becoming Global

The bigger story is not only what is happening between two Korean companies. It is how the infrastructure around K-Beauty is changing.

Korean brands once depended heavily on overseas shoppers finding individual products through specialist websites, social media or trips to Korea. Now major retailers are building more organised pathways for Korean beauty to reach international consumers.

Olive Young’s partnership with Sephora is a clear example. After its 2026 rollout in the US and other markets, the partnership is scheduled to expand to additional regions including the UK, Middle East and Australia in 2027.

Importantly, that does not mean Australians have had no access to Olive Young or K-Beauty before then. The 2027 announcement specifically refers to the expansion of the Olive Young × Sephora partnership into Australia.

Why Australia Should Watch

Australia already has a growing K-Beauty market, from specialist Korean beauty retailers to products appearing in larger beauty and pharmacy chains.

What may change next is the way those products are selected and presented. If large Korean platforms and international retailers bring more curated K-Beauty ranges into Australia, shoppers could discover brands through a much more mainstream retail experience.

For Australian consumers, that could mean more choice and easier discovery. But it could also make the role of the retailer more important: the products we see first may increasingly depend on which platform is doing the curating.

What I’m Watching Next

For me, the most interesting part of Musinsa versus Olive Young is that they represent two different ways K-Beauty can grow.

Olive Young is taking its beauty curation expertise outward. Musinsa is bringing beauty into a much broader fashion and lifestyle ecosystem.

Australia may eventually feel the effects of both approaches. So rather than asking only which K-Beauty brand will be the next big thing, I’m also watching which retailers will shape how Australians discover the next generation of Korean beauty.
